Are you ever concerned about what people might think of your job, the questions they might have or that you will not be able think of the right arguments?

This workshop is for anyone who might find themselves talking about why they work with research animals to lay audiences. If you work with research animals, it will help you think through what you want to say to people and communicate it clearly.

Understanding Animal Research Oceania supports open communication that helps everyone to understand why it is sometimes important to use animals in scientific research and teaching. Successful communication is not usually about winning arguments, but about creating mutual understanding. This training session will give you the skills and confidence to communicate more openly and confidently.

Being able to share your work with others is important for career advancement, and because it helps you to remain emotionally connected. Feeling able to confidently share our experiences and ideas we care about provides us with the support we all need.

We will cover:

  • An introduction to communications techniques and messaging
  • Public views and your experiences of animal-based research
  • Answering challenging questions
  • Managing hostility
